Financial Literacy - The Real Glass Ceiling

For years, I thought the biggest barrier for Black women entrepreneurs was funding. If we could just get access to capital — the loans, the grants, the investors — we’d finally have a fair shot.
But after working with hundreds of entrepreneurs here in Philly, I realized something deeper: It’s not just about how much money you make, it’s about how much you understand.
That’s the real glass ceiling.
You can land a $10K grant and still be unsure of how to properly invest it. You can have a booming business and still feel like the money disappears as fast as it comes in.
And you’re not alone — studies show that over 80% of small business failures are tied to poor financial management (U.S. Bank).
Even more telling, only 27% of entrepreneurs say they feel confident in their financial literacy skills, and for Black women, that gap is even wider due to generational barriers and systemic inequities.
That's when I became serious about changing that narrative.
Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:
When you understand your numbers, you make decisions from power, not panic.
When your systems are tight, your money works for you — not the other way around.
And when you learn the why behind taxes, budgeting, and cash flow, the stress starts to fade — because now, you’re in control.
Through our financial literacy workshops, tax strategy sessions, and business coaching consultations, we’ve helped women across Philadelphia turn confusion into confidence and chaos into clarity.
This is also why I became a mentor with ShadowHer — to pour back into women walking the same road I did, reminding them that wealth isn’t just about numbers; it’s about freedom, peace, and sustainability.
3 Ways to Start Breaking That Ceiling:
💡 Spend 30 minutes a week reviewing your finances — not to stress, but to understand.
💡 Treat financial literacy like self-care — because peace of mind is wealth.
💡 Get guidance. You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Financial literacy isn’t a luxury. It’s liberation. And when we master it, we don’t just break the glass ceiling —we build new floors for the next generation to stand on.
If you’re ready to get clear on your numbers and grow with intention.
